Try to review your checking account statements and bank statement as soon as possible after it arrives to make sure there are no unauthorized charges.  Look for unauthorized activity or charges on the account regardless of the source.  If you suspect that a thief has used one of your checks from your checking account or your credit card, go right to the phone and call the bank.  Under federal law and most state laws, you are required to exercise reasonable promptness in examining any bank statement that shows payments from your account in order to avoid liability.  Reviewing bank statements also allows the account holder time to review checking or savings balances, bank fees and expenditures.
