The prospectus tells an investor about the fund’s investment philosophy.  For example, most money funds will state their intention to obtain the highest level of income as possible while preserving principal and liquidity.  As a rule, money funds regard the safety of principal, not the pursuit of yield, as paramount.  Other types of mutual funds (stock, bond, etc.), however, usually list income and capital gain accumulation as their primary investment objectives.
