A financial institution has a variety of people who can help you with different banking services. Understanding the jobs of these bank workers will allow you to know who you should talk to when you go to the bank. The customer service representative is often the first bank employee a customer comes in contact with at the local bank. Customers usually talk to a customer service representative in person when they first enter a bank or on the phone and they can help you open your account, explain services the bank offers, answer general questions regarding bank accounts and refer you to a person who can help you with a specific banking need. Often, the customer service representative can provide written information in person or via email explaining the banks products.

The bank teller usually stands behind a counter and help bank customers open an account, explain the account products and services, answer general questions or refer you to a person who can help you with specific bank service nor handled by the teller. Of course, the primary duties performed by the bank teller include, handling deposits, check cashing, account transfers and cash transactions. The teller will also handle requests for cashier’s checks, certified funds, information on the best CD rates offered by the bank as well as provide written information explaining the banks products.

Loan officers work in the lending department of the bank. This can be department may include personal loans, residential mortgages, commercial lending, auto loans or home equity loans. The lending department may be located at the local branch or the main bank office or even at a central loan processing center. The loan officer takes applications for loans offered at the bank answers questions, provides written information explaining loan products and can help you fill out a loan application for the various loan products offered by that particular bank.

The branch manager supervises the local bank operations. The branch manager can help fix problems that often cannot be immediately solved by other bank employees. The branch manager is primarily a manger of the bank employees and is not often involved with the day to day direct customer interaction, however, the branch manager may authorized as the bank employee to sign off or authorize large financial transactions.

Always ask questions until you are clear on all the information, and don’t sign anything you don’t understand. If you don’t know who to talk to, ask for help. Someone at your bank will take you to the right person or its time to switch to another bank.
