CD rates offered by Wells Fargo continued to move marginally lower for the month of August.  The greatest rate changes in Wells Fargo CD rates took place on the long term bank CDs while the short term certificates remained mostly unchanged.  The Wells Fargo CD rate changes in August were relatively mild with the slight variations in interest rates depending on the geographic location of the prospective account holder.

Wells Fargo CDs are promoted as special offer / promotional bank CDs and standard CDs.  As one might expect, the promotional CD rates marketed by the bank are significantly higher than the standard bank CDs.  Although the rates are relatively stable across the nation where Wells Fargo Bank conducts business, there are minor differences in the rates offered for different locations.

The following sample Wells Fargo CD rates are for account holders in California.

Special offer CD interest rates which require a minimum deposit of $5,000.00 includes the following rates and terms:

11 month CD rate 0.15%
26 month CD rate 0.40%
35 month CD rate 0.70%
45 month CD rate 1.15%
58 month CD rate 1.65%

Compared to the national average CD interest rates, Wells Fargo CD rates are nothing to write home about including the promotional or special CD rates.  Based on data from the FDIC, the national average one year CD rate is at 0.43 percent, well above the Wells Fargo 11 month CD rate.  The national average CD rate for a 2 year CD is 0.69 percent which is higher than the Wells 26 month CD rate special.  Only the 58 month rate of Wells Fargo surpasses the national average rate of 1.53 percent. 

Standard CD rates from Wells Fargo which require a minimum deposit of $2,500.00 include the following rates and terms:

3 month CD rate 0.05%
6 month CD rate 0.05%
1 year CD rate 0.10%

As a comparison to other states, Wells Fargo CD rates in Florida displayed the following differences in CD rates for the promotional bank CDs:

11 month CD rate is the same at 0.15%
26 month CD rate special is not available in Florida
35 month CD rate is the same 0.70%
45 month CD rate is 15 basis points or 15/100’s of a percent higher at 1.30%
58 month CD rate is just one basis point lower at 1.64%
